Jan has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary and Special Education from the University of Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania. Her areas of certification are in Special education, Elementary education,Learning Disabilities, and Language Arts. Jan has 37 years of teaching experience. She has been at Town & Country School for 35 years.

Jan believes that in order to teach a child, you must first reach his/her heart. Once you’ve done that, they are more willing to listen to what you have to say. Teaching children with special needs is challenging, rewarding, exciting, tiring, and a blessing. She believes that every child has the potential to learn and grow, it just takes getting to know them as individuals, and finding what works best. Being structured, yet flexible, is the key to each day, because no two days are ever the same in the classroom. She continually encourages her students to accept differences in others, for the world would be a very boring place if we were all the same. To further help students accept, understand, and learn to have compassion for others and their individual differences, she posts this reminder at the front of her classroom:

FAIR ISN’T everybody getting the same thing…

FAIR IS everybody getting what they need in order to be SUCCESSFUL.

It is her greatest desire that each of her students finds success academically, emotionally, and socially!
